European Commission proposal to amend EU petrol, diesel and gas oil quality requirements
Closing date: 22 November 2007
Summary: These documents seek views on a European Commission proposal to amend the EU Fuel Quality Directive 98/70/EC. The proposed amendments would require fuel suppliers to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of fuels by 10%, we believe this would be delivered by significantly increased uptake of biofuels. Minor amendments to petrol specifications are proposed in order to relax barriers to increased bioethanol use. The proposal also significantly reduces the maximum permissible sulphur content of gas oil for use in non-road mobile machinery (e.g. construction and agricultural equipment) to enable future emissions control technology on these machines. The views of fuel suppliers, biofuel producers, environmental organisations, non-road gas oil users and vehicle users are particularly sought.
