2009 campaign information
2009 campaign dates
European Mobility Week 2009 will be 16-22 September. EMW now incorporates In Town Without My Car! (Car Free Day), therefore ITWMC may be held on any day of the week, though 22nd September is the preferred and established date, which in 2009 falls on a Tuesday.
2009 theme
Improving City Climates
Climate change has been selected as the common EMW theme for 2009 because the annual UN conference on climate change will be hosted by the EU in Copenhagen in December 2009. The slogan Improving City Climates will permit a wider interpretation than climate change, e.g. general ambience of the city, peacefulness, liveability, quality of life, air quality, traffic congestion, road safety etc.
2009 criteria for participating towns and cities
- Organise a week of activities, 16-22 September, taking into account the annual theme
- Implement at least one permanent measure which contributes to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport. Where possible at least one of these measures should be a permanent reallocation of road space in favour of walking, cycling or public transport (eg road closure, wider pavement, new cycle or bus lane, new traffic calming scheme, lower speed limit).
- Organise the In Town Without My Car! event, i.e. car free street, setting aside one or several areas reserved solely for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport for at least one whole day, preferably (but not essentially) on Tuesday 22 September 2009.
