The scheme will be providing grants of £1,000 a year for up to three years to state funded primary schools in England who want to set up a walking bus. There are approximately 700 walking buses already. Under this grant an additional 1,903 schools will receive funding for new walking buses.

A smaller grant of £500 was available for schools who wanted to set up an alternative walking initiative, such as Walk on Wednesdays. 1,328 schools have successfully applied for the other initiative grant and will be setting up other walking projects across England.

Most of the new walking buses and other projects are expected to start during the summer term.  The funding is intended as start up money to demonstrate to schools parents and Local Authorities the benefits of encouraging children to walk to school.

To receive the grant in years two and three each school will have to provide evidence that they have saved the relevant number of return car trips per day. For walking buses this is 5 trips and for the other walking initiatives this is 2.5 return car trips per day.

The grants are being made as part of the Government's Travelling to School project launched jointly by DfT and DfES in 2003.
